FAQs for MVHS Band Program

Who Rocks?

If you've attended any of the Varisity Football games, you've probably heard the band chant before the crowd bursts out into the Drum cadence - WHITE CHOCOLATE.  But what is the chant and what does it mean for our program.

The Mountain View High School Black & Gold Brigade was founded in the Fall of 2009.  Before Mountain View officially opened its doors for the first day of class, students from nearby schools came together in our first Band Camp.  That July, it was rainy and hot but the 20 students who showed up made a commitment to excellence that would start to define our program.  From marching fundamentals in the parking lot with duct tape (the field behind the stadium currently used as the Band Practice Field was not yet complete) to learning the tune that was to become our school fight song - each of the students came with a desire to have a great year and to start the program on the best possible foot.  That year, there were no seniors in the Marching Band so the student leadership was comprised of underclassmen.  By the Fall of 2010, the band had made great strides by showcasing our first uniform and participating in our first marching competitions.  Setting the standard by achieving all Excellent and Superior ratings, the band was establishing itself as an enterntaining and award winning ensemble. The Band continues to grow and competes in competitions throughout the state and has garnered several awards in all aspects of the Marching Band, Jazz Band and Concert Performance Evaluations.

Since our first season, the Marching Band has continued to perform entertaining shows for our community and has partcipated in various community events.  The Band has performed the National Anthem at the Gwinnett Braves CoolRay Field (2010, 2012, 2013 & 2014); the Dacula Memorial Day Parade (2012, 2013, 2014); the Mall of Georgia Christmas Parade (2010-present); the 38th Annual Fantasy of Lights Parade in Gatlinburg, TN (2013); and the annual Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Christmas Parade in 2014 in which the band was pronounced the Battle of the Bands winner!

The Band Program serves over 140 students through the Wind Symphony, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Color Guard (Fall & Winter), Percussion Ensemble, and the Black & Gold Brigade Marching Band.  Students in the Band Program have also been selected to perform in the Georgia Music Educator's Association All State Band; District 13 Honor Bands; Gwinnett County Youth Wind Symphony, Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony; Atlanta Concert Band; Atlanta Swing Band and have auditioned for the Georgia Governor's Honors Program.

Graduates of the Band Program have continued their study and appreciation of music at such universities as Lee University (TN), University of Evansville, (IL), Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, Georgia Southern University, University of West Georgia, Georgia State University, University of North Georgia, Georgia Gwinnett College, University of Memphis (TN), Albany State University, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke & Middle Tennessee State University TN).
